Baxter 04 - 09 December - 2006-11-24 Johannesburg-based Abangani Theatre's cutting-edge women-power production Tapping Hearts will beat on the Baxter Sanlam Studio stage for a limited season from 4 to 9 December. Described as South African theatre at its best, director Jullian Seleke Mokoto, winner of two FNB Vita Awards, incorporates drama, tap dance and music to create a compelling and entertaining piece of theatre. He has received great acclaim in the past for his productions of Shattered Dreams, Mary the Unfaithful Woman, Blind Mind, The Last Mile and The Cause. Tapping Hearts taps into the hearts of South African women who want to be free in expressing themselves and who believe that one day South Africa will be run by women. These women present an uncomfortable threat to those men who do not want to accept their responsibilities of maintaining their families but appear to have no difficulty in spending loads of money in entertaining other women. By coining the phrase "AmaTriple S” (which stands for single, successful and self-sufficient), they believe the power of women is becoming more and more prevalent in South African society today. The dynamic cast is made up of Molobane Mbatha, Priscilla Mphangoa, Sibongile Nkosi, Lerato Ndlovu, Lindiwe Ndlovu and Ncebakazi Thintsila. Director Mokoto explains, “I was inspired to write this play through my observation and understanding of women's issues. Despite being of the opposite sex I believe there are many stories about women that need to be told. The play is not anti-male; it is really about survival of the individual.” With choreography by Samson Mabuza and lighting by Nomvula Molepo, the energetic six performers communicate emotions of anger, happiness and excitement through tap dance, which is described as an action or discourse intended to rationalise or distract. Reviewer Caroline Smart said, “Julian Seleke Mokoto's work is well written and excellently directed with clear-cut thought patterns and fine performances from the cast. It invariably displays a considerable command of moods as well as depth of emotion all mixed with a strong input of humour, where appropriate.” The production has already toured throughout South Africa with great success and continues its national tour after the Baxter Theatre Centre run at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 12 to 23 December. With five performances only, Tapping Hearts runs for a limited season from 4 to 9 December in the Baxter Sanlam Studio. For discounted block and schools bookings call Sandy Gwele on 021 680 3991.
