The Song recital An die Musik takes place twice annually and is presented in collaboration with Mimi Coertse who selected two singers to perform works by Franz Schubert, Benjamin Britten, Reynaldo Hahn, Francis Poulenc as well as South African composers such as Dirkie de Villiers, Arthur Ellis and S. Le Roux Marais.

Hanli Stapela (soprano) has recently returned to SA after living in the USA for six years. She could recently be heard in the title role of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and is currently working on her Ph.D. in singing through the University of the Free State, while lecturing part time at the Opera School, Tshwane University of Technology. She will be accompanied by Albie van Schalkwyk from the University of the Free State.

Stéfan Louw (tenor) made his debut at The State Theatre as Bepper in Leoncavallo’s Il Pagliacci, for which he received the FNB Vita Opera Award for Best Newcomer in Opera. Since then he appeared in numerous other productions in South Africa and made his international debut in Chicago as Duncan in Mzilikazi Khumalo’s Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu in 2004. He was a founding member of The Black Tie Ensemble (BTE). He will be accompanied by Susan Steenkamp-Swanepoel who has been involved with The Black Tie Ensemble since 2000 as coach and accompanist.
