Die naaimasjien by die Fugard

Joho! productions and Fugard theatre Present Die Naaimasjien with Sandra Prinsloo

Rachelle Greeff’s beloved stage character Magdaleen, searchingly portrayed by Sandra Prinsloo in Greeff’s acclaimed one-woman play Die Naaimasjien (The Sewing Machine), will now also grace the Fugard Theatre stage from 15 – 19 February 2011.

Die Naaimasjien, which has toured extensively around the country for the past two years, is a compassionate window into the life of the 81-year-old Magdaleen, who recalls a life lived in a different age from behind her sewing machine. This occurs on the day she has to let go of her beloved Bernina, and as she polishes the machine that has helped her fit out her children, she recounts her life-story, interwoven with snippets of South Africa’s history.

Greeff, author of several works of Afrikaans fiction, was the recipient of the Nagtegaal Theatre Text Prize in 2008 for Die Naaimasjien, her first play. Since then the piece has been met with standing ovations and sold-out audiences at venues and festivals around the country. Die Naaimasjien earned Prinsloo a Fleur du Cap for best actress, and also won the Fleur du Cap award for best new South African text. At the 2009 Klein Karoo arts festival, it received the Herrie Kanna Popularity Prize, and Best Female Actress award.

Acclaimed director Hennie van Greunen is again directing Die Naaimasjien at the Fugard.

Die Naaimasjien will have English subtitles. The translation of Greeff’s finely nuanced Afrikaans text has been done by poet and translator Leon de Kock, now professor of English at Stellenbosch University. De Kock, award-winning author in his own right, has translated, among others novels and literary works, Marlene van Niekerk’s Triomf and Etienne van Heerden’s In Stede van die Liefde.

Tickets for the Fugard Theatre run of Die Naaimasjien (15 – 19 February), cost R90, R110 and R130. Bookings can be done online at www.thefugard.com, or by phoning the Fugard Theatre Box Office on 021 461 4554. Seating is now reserved.
