Call for applications for National Arts Festival Committee

 Professionals who have a broad knowledge and experience of the arts sector are invited to apply to serve on the Festival Committee of the National Arts Festival. Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they possess:

  • A specialist knowledge in theatre, music, dance and / or visual art and a reasonably good knowledge of inter-disciplinary trends in the arts sector.
  • A strong network with key arts institutions across South Africa and a reasonably good relationship with key producers and festivals across the globe.
  • A passion for advancing excellence in the South African arts sector and a commitment to grow audiences for a diverse range of artistic and cultural expressions.
  • A good knowledge of policies, development trends and issues related to the practice of the arts in South Africa.

Key responsibilities of members of the Festival Committee include:

  • Acting in advisory capacity to the Festival Director by reviewing proposals, advising and offering recommendations to the Festival Director with regard to compilation of the annual programme
  • Reviewing the work of South African artists who qualify to be considered for the Standard Bank Young Artist Award
  • Attending meetings as per invitation of the Festival Director with visiting international producers who are scouting for South African productions
  • Conducting walkabout tours of exhibitions on the Festival's Main programme in the case of the Festival's visual arts programme
  • Attending productions / exhibitions on behalf of the Festival Director in major cities to review artistic and audience trends, and to inform the Festival Director of newly emerging talent whose careers need to be followed.

Meetings of the Festival Committee are held twice a year in Johannesburg. However, members are expected to be available for on-going telephonic and email engagement as required by the Festival Director. During the Festival, members of the Committee are hosted in Grahamstown for a minimum of five days. They are allocated a range of responsibilities which include acting as judges for the Standard Bank Fringe Ovation Award and identifying cutting edge artists and arts institutions that can be advanced through the Festival's Fringe, Arena and Main programmes.

Members of the Festival Committee will receive a modest honorarium for their services. Their intention to serve on the Committee should primarily be driven by their passion for the arts. Interested individuals who would like to be considered as potential members for the Committee are requested to submit the following to the Festival Director no later than Friday 19 August 2011:

  • A covering letter with a motivation outlining why the applicant would like to serve on the Committee
  • A detailed CV outlining education, skills, competencies and work experience in the arts.
  • The names of at least two contactable references from the South African arts sector.

Successful applicants will serve a maximum three year term. Appointment of new members to the Festival Committee will be proposed by the Festival Director and Festival Committee Chairperson to the Festival's Board of Directors for ratification. The Festival reserves the right of appointment and which will be based on the Festival's mission to be the number one platform for the promotion of artistic excellence in South Africa.

The next National Arts Festival will be held from 28 June – 8 July 2012 in Grahamstown.
