Local is “kult”: Vera Grønvold on Bergen, Norway

Vera Grønvold - 2009-11-26

By capturing her image(s) of Bergen, Norway, on camera, Vera Grønvold provides an insider’s perspective on this vibrant, modern, yet historical European city. Bergen displays an interesting variety of architecture and an exciting cultural scene, and is surrounded by nature. Sea and mountain are within walking range from the city centre.

Tips for tourists

Although tourists typically visit the fish market, the wharf, Fløy Mountain and/or Mount Ulriken, Vera suggests visiting the peninsula of Nordnes. The park there is perfect for picnics and swimming in spring and/or summer. Here, there is an abundance of flowers, as well as many old, cosy, white wooden houses with narrow passages between them.

Vera suggests hiking up Stoltzekleiven as well, a mountain top which can be reached by following a path of steep steps all the way to the top. After the hike, she recommends drinking a well-deserved coffee in one of the many cafés, followed by a visit to Skostrædet, a lane alongside her house known for its many cafés, galleries and second-hand and designer clothing stores.

Vera recommends visiting Bergen during the spring, perhaps even around 17 May, the Norwegian Constitutional Day, which is typified by children’s parades, bands and costumes.
