From the Dance Umbrella to Russia!

The FNB Dance Umbrella 2008 celebrated its 20th anniversary this year in a three-week marathon of new contemporary dance works from both local and international choreographers. One of the commissioned works was Back by PJ Sabbagha.

Considered one of the highlights of the festival this year, Dance Forum has connected the choreographer with the Dialogue Dance Festival which takes place in Kostroma, Russia from April 28 - May 1.

Back, choreographed by PJ Sabbagha, will be performed by Dada Masilo and Lulu Mlangeni. The work flirts with memory and dabbles with desire. It explores our need to be needed, our pursuit for belonging and our fight for independence.

Back captures the ambiguity of our experiences in relationships. In short it is something about love, loss, memory, desire, intimacy, jealousy, belonging and isolation.

This International Festival of Contemporary Dance Duets is called "Diversia" and is the main dance event of the year to take place in Kostroma. The festival is a programme of duets from countries that include Russia, Hungary, the USA, Czech Republic, Latvia and South Africa. In the course of three nights, eight programmes will be presented that will include a punk rock duet from Chicago and African dance. While in Russia, PJ and his dancers will facilitate a workshop in African dance.
