Sanlam's 40 leading works go on show

2011-12-01

40 leading works from the Sanlam Art Collection go on show at Stephan Welz & Co at the revamped Alphen Hotel in Constantia on 7 December 2011

One of South Africa’s most important corporate art collections, the Sanlam Art Collection, will exhibit a selection of 40 leading works at Stephan Welz & Co’s premises at the Alphen Hotel in Constantia from 7 December 2011 to 14 January 2012. The Index: 40 Leading Works from the Sanlam Art Collection exhibition includes carefully selected works that are important representations of a subject or period in art history and represent the entire time span that the Sanlam Art Collection covers, from the late 19th century to the present.

Many of these works haven’t been seen outside of Sanlam before. The exhibition presents a unique opportunity to the inhabitants of the central and southern suburbs of Cape Town to view these rarely seen works usually visible only to visitors to the company’s offices in Bellville and other cities in South Africa.

For a perfect outing away from the heat and bustle of the city this summer, visitors to the exhibition can enjoy the newly refurbished facilities at the Alphen Hotel, which include two independent restaurants: La Belle Café and Bakery and 5Rooms.

The exhibition is presented by Sanlam Private Investments, the private wealth management company in the Sanlam Group.

Stefan Hundt, curator of the Sanlam Art Collection, says, “Since 1965, the acquisition of artworks has always been done with advice obtained from respected independent experts in the field. When making acquisitions a set of relevant criteria are followed, backed by experience and knowledge. As a result the collection has over the years acquired a considerable number of historically important South African works. Sanlam prides itself on being able to share these rich treasures with all fellow South Africans. The Index exhibition is a continuation of what has become a well-entrenched tradition and we hope to bring fellow South Africans together to share and engage with some inspiring art.”

Among others, works from Irma Stern, William Kentridge, Anton van Wouw, Edoardo Villa, Kenneth Bakker, Christo Coetzee, Francois Krige and Pieter Hugo Naudé will be exhibited.
