Sing ’it

Sing ’it reaches 1000 entries

Maggie van Eeden - 2011-10-14

Sing ’it has topped the 1 000 entry mark and Maggie van Eeden chatted to the 1 000th entrant, Derek Crosson, about his lyrics, what he would do with the R3 000 prize money if he won, and why he decided to take part.

How does it feel to be the 1 000th entrant?

I was quite surprised when I received the call, but it’s good to know that there are over 1 000 entries and so many people are interested in writing lyrics.

Why did you decide to take part in the competition?

I love music and enjoy a good challenge, and writing a song that people will always remember / listen to is quite a challenge.

Which participating artist do you hope will pick one of your songs?

I write my songs hard rock style, but sometimes my words mean different things to other people and if any of them are led to express those lyrics in a genre other than rock then so be it.

What would you do with the prize money?

Definitely buy a new guitar!

When did you start writing songs and how do you go about it?

I started writing songs only quite recently when I started learning how to play the guitar, and the better I got at playing the more I carried on writing. There are different ways to go about it – most of the time I start with just one word or sentence and then come up with a verse or two then make a chord progression for it on an acoustic guitar and see how it sounds. After that I try to come up with a chorus and then a bridge last ...

That's just one of the ways I write. When I get stuck I draw and it helps me to think creatively again. I think that music is just as important as lyrics when writing a song (you can listen to songs without lyrics, right?) and with the right music you can make any seemingly “stupid” lyrics sound good and people will still like it.
