The Unisa Music Foundation is presenting a solo guitar recital by Capetonian  Derek Gripper on Saturday 13 August in the intimate and modern Miriam Makeba Concert Hall at the Muckleneuk Campus, Unisa.

Gripper is a composer and guitarist from Cape Town. He will play works by Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti, Malian kora player Toumani Diabaté, South African bow player Madosini, and transcriptions of the solo violin works of J.S.Bach, as well a selection of his own compositions.

To date Derek has released seven CDs, as well as a special edition vinyl record released in Germany in 2009.

He has collaborated with a wide range of musicians from different musical backgrounds, from Cape Jazz trumpeter Alex van Heerden and Xhosa bow player Madosini, to Classical Indian tabla player Udai Mazumdar.

In 2010 Derek started New Cape Records, a music label dedicated to releasing the best of Cape music. Notable releases include Madosini, Alex van Heerden and Gramadoelas, as well as Derek’s own catalogue of compositions.

Tickets for this event are sold only at the door at R80 for adults and R60 for students and seniors.
