From its acclaimed sell-out London run Caryl Churchill’s father and son play A NUMBER, starring British father and son thesps TIMOTHY & SAMUEL WEST comes to the Fugard Theatre Studio in October.

After rave reviews and a sell-out run in London Eric Abraham and the Fugard Theatre present the London production of Caryl Churchill’s moving father and son drama – A Number – at the new Fugard Theatre Studio from 4–29 October 2011. In its South African premiere of the play this production stars Britain’s much loved father and son actors Timothy and Samuel West and is directed by highly regarded British Director Jona than Munby, with designs by Paul Wills and lighting by Hartley Kemp.

A Numberwas written by Churchill in 2002 when the controversies surrounding the possibility of human cloning made regular news headlines. The play features a father (Salter) and his three sons, Bernard (B1), Bernard (B2) and Michael Black, two of whom are clones of the original. The play examines the intricate concept of identity, the age-old question of “nature versus nurture” and the highly controversial concept of human cloning.

Samuel West (NOTTING HILL, HOWARD’S END, VAN HELSING) has been cast in the role of King George (a role which won Colin Firth the Best Actor Oscar in THE KING’S SPEECH this year) in NOTTING HILL director Roger Michell’s film HYDE PARK ON THE HUDSON opposite Bill Murray and Laura Linney which is currently shooting in London. Timothy West (IRIS, ENDGAME, THE DAY OF THE JACKAL, CRY FREEDOM, CHURCHILL AND THE GENERALS) has appeared in many primetime British television series and is seldom off the London stage. Samuel West’s mother is the beloved British comedy actress Prunella Scales who starred in the vastly popular comedy series opposite John Cleese – FAWLTY TOWERS.

A Number originally debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in London on 23 September 2002 with Michael Gambon and Daniel Craig. It has since had various sold out runs in London and in the USA, and is coming to the Fugard Theatre Studio after it’s most recent sold out run at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London in November 2010, of which the UK press wrote:

***** ‘Theatre at its powerful best’ The Sunday Times

***** ‘A sensational play in every sense’ Sunday Express

****   ‘The West dynasty thrives” The Times

****   ‘Superb acting from the Wests’ Evening Standard

****   ‘Jonathan Munby’s riveting revival’ Mail on Sunday

Performances of the 50-minute long production at the Fugard Theatre Studio will take place on Tuesdays at 21:00, and Wednesday to Saturdays at 19:30 and 21:00. Tickets are R200 per seat and will be available from Computicket and the Fugard Theatre Box Office (021 461 4554) from Monday 15th August. Concessions are available for Friends of the Fugard, Senior Citizens, block bookings and Students. The Fugard Theatre wishes to acknowledge and thank the Cape Grace hotel for their partnership and support with this production.
