XhosAfrika Network Conference
Artscape, Cape Town
26–27 Augustus

 This is to inform you that the first XhosAfrika Network Conference will be held on the 26th and 27th of August 2011 at Artscape, Cape Town. The main focus will be on isiXhosa as a language of science, technology, industry, education and reading.

The following guest speakers and respondents were invited: Mr Paul Mashatile, National Minister of Arts and Culture and respondents Dr Sindiwe Magona, Prof Ncedile Saule and Dr Neville Alexander to focus on the status of isiXhosa at national level. Dr Ivan Meyer, Western Cape Minister for Cultural Affairs and Sports and respondents Mr B. Mangxaba, Dr V. Nomlomo, Mr Z. Wababa en Mr T. Matomela to focus on the status of isiXhosa at provincial level. Mr Chris Swepu, CEO of PANSALB and respondents Prof Sandile Gxilishe and Miss Xolisa Guzula to focus on the status of isiXhosa at community level.   

The conference forms part of the Artscape’s popular Schools Festival. A similar conference organised by the Afrikaanse Taalraad was held for Afrikaans last year at the same venue.

The XhosAfrika Network is a multilingual movement comprising of various language institutions, organisations and government departments, which includes PANSALB – Western Cape, Artscape Audience Development and Education Department, SBA, VVA, PRAESA, CASAS, CFB – NLSA, UWC, CPUT, UCT, EDULIS, the Premier’s Office (Western Cape), the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the Western Cape Education Department. The Network promotes collaboration of two language groups, namely Afrikaans and isiXhosa, and strives to enhance the further development and usage of isiXhosa and Afrikaans with regard to knowledge production, wealth creation and the development of self-worth.
