Sing 'it: Niskerone and SFR

Niskerone and SFR - 2011-07-12

Currently known as the "the man behind It Came From The Jungle" (BPM Mag), "king of the underground Drum & Bass jungle" (Cape Argus) and "Cape Town's Drum & Bass stalwart" (Mixmag), Niskerone was raised on the dusty streets of Mitchell’s Plain in the heart of the notorious Cape Flats.

Niskerone’s combination of wicked DJ skills and an extensive knowledge of the genre led him to host a radio show on UCT Radio for two years alongside Trouble On Vinyl, Zombie Recordings and Hollow Point recording artist SFR. This was followed by another year at Mutha FM co-hosting a show with South African bass ambassadors Counterstrike.

In 2006 Niskerone was offered a permanent residency at the legendary haven for quality underground music, Fiction DJ Bar, and the legendary It Came from the Jungle was born. The brand night took Cape Town's clubbing scene to a new level and rose to become South Africa's biggest weekly Drum & Bass night. With two CD releases and a host of podcast mixes under his belt, Niskerone's energetic and innovative style of mixing has won the souls of many a dance floor and has secured him slots alongside industry leaders such as Pendulum, The Cyberpunkers, Drumsound, Raiden, Danny Wheeler, Nymfo, Break, and even an impromptu back-to-back with Holland's Mr “Let The Bass Kick”, DJ Chuckie.

He has since toured Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Sweden, playing at some of Europe's best-regarded clubs, including Spain's oldest nightclub, Florida 135 (est 1942 and ranked among DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs Poll). In 2010 Niskerone embarked on his third tour of Europe with shows booked alongside Busta Rhymes, Pendulum Live, Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77, 2 Many DJs Live, Sub Focus, Caspa, DJ Friction, Richie Hawtin and many more.

Aside from having residencies in three cities across South Africa, Niskerone has played the stages of all the major festivals in the country, with headline slots at RAMFEST, Synergy Live, Earthdance, Rocking the Daisies, Oppikoppi and Rezonance Festival.

Over the past seven years SFR has built up a solid reputation as the “go-to guy” for quality South African bass music. A testament to this is his extensive discography of 12” vinyl releases on international labels, including the massive UK-based imprints Trouble On Vinyl and Zombie Recordings.

In 2008 the signature SFR sound began to evolve and he took on the dance music behemoth that is dubstep. He has since focused on developing a unique style within the genre by adding a unique South African influence to a heavy bass-led sound, with emphasis aimed squarely at the dance floor. This has proven successful and again saw SFR line up a string of vinyl releases on UK- and US-based labels, including Guinea Pig, Grid Recordings, Hollow Point and W10 Recordings. Last year SFR worked closely with a few renowned South African artists, including Jack Parow and Van Coke Kartel.

He’s the producer behind Jack Parow’s smash hit “Byellville” and officially remixed Van Coke Kartel’s single “Ondier Kom” off their Skop, Skiet en Donder album. Aside from being a studio wunderkind, SFR has also made a name for himself in the world of performance. He’s played electrifying sets across South Africa and has toured Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden and the UK on numerous occasions since 2007. When asked what he has lined up next, SFR confirmed that he will be reuniting with long-time partner and collaborator Niskerone “on a new studio and stage project”, as well as working on more music with Afrikaans hero Jack Parow.
