Damage to Pink Loerie Billboard

2011-04-21

The Pink Loerie Organising Committee has condemned the damage done to its advertising panel on the billboard of Knysna Tourism outside Knysna.

Coenie Kukkuk, one of the organisers said: “We were alerted yesterday by our design company in Knysna, 2 Heads, that someone had painted black paint over the words “Pink Loerie” on the billboard. The advertisement has been up for more than a month and no objections were raised against it. It contains only wording and there is no reason for anyone to take offence.”

Knysna Tourism is a sponsor of the Foreplay Energy Drink Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival 2011 in association with Southern Comfort – the official name of the annual pink festival which is set to take place from 27 April to 1 May this year. They have kindly agreed to replace the damaged panel.

“Ironically,” Kukkuk added, “they chose to black out only the words “Pink Loerie” and left the theme “Celebrate Life!” We shall obviously proceed to “celebrate life” during the festival without interruption. We know that we have the support of the majority of Knysna residents as ultimately they and our chosen six local charities such as Loeriehof Old Age home and Masezame Art Project benefit.”

The mayor, Councillor Eleanore Bowe-Spies, said in a message to the organising committee, which will be published in the Pink Loere News: “We all know that the Pink Loerie brings a glimmer of glamour to the town of Knysna each year and this year promises to be even better and brighter with an added extra arts element which is sure to broaden the scope and reach of our beloved Loerie.”

A huge turn-out is expected and some hotels and letting agents have already reported a 90% occupancy rate. The organisers said that due to the closure of schools during the two consecutive long weekends, a bigger than normal crowd is expected at the parade on Saturday, 30 April at 3 pm.

It was also announced that dogs are more than welcome during the parade, as one of the sponsors, Royal Canin, has sponsored a doggy walk with prizes for best dressed dogs and watering points along the route.
